Building the Safety Net

Once your baseline is controlled and grocery bills are optimized, every remaining dollar must be given a job. Savings should never be 'what is left at the end of the month'. Savings must be a line item on your ledger.

Phase 1: Micro-Emergency Fund

Target: $1,000. This covers a blown tire, a sudden pediatric copay, or a minor appliance failure without relying on high-interest credit.

Phase 2: True Emergency Fund

Target: 3-6 months of baseline expenses (refer back to your setting baseline calculations). Protects against job loss or severe medical issues.

Phase 3: Future Investments

Target: Long-term compounding. Educational accounts (like 529s in the US) and retirement accounts. This phase only begins when Phase 2 is complete.
